Making up for the gloomy months of winter, the Scandinavian summer is one where the sun almost never sets; where people’s vitamin-D levels spike up and spirits are at their highest. To celebrate the season, Swedish duo Gustafsson and Sjögren (you can read about them here) of GoS watches have created the Midnight Sun.
The Midnight Sun features the brand’s signature stainless Damascus steel case, forged by master bladesmith Johan Gustafsson. With a 45mm case diameter, which is slightly larger than GoS’ usual size range, the case features a more prominent bezel as well as a thicker crown. To make the Damascus steel’s swirls stand out more, GoS have worked on improving the finishing process to make the Midnight Sun’s case the most outstanding to date.
On the case you’ll also find a touch of Nordic mythology, with a gilded “Midgård Serpent” engraving on all four lugs. Without delving too deep, the Midgård Serpent is one of the names of Jörmungand, a giant sea serpent who encircles the mortal world we live. So in essence, the Midgård Serpent represents the world.
The dial consists of a solid gold disk with a sunburst satin finish, which sits under a hand forged Damascus steel chapter ring with a concave shape, where the triangular cutouts are sloped towards the center of the dial. Matcging the case elements, the pointy lance hands are also made of Damascus steel.
But the dial isn’t the only bit of sunshine in the watch. Turn the case over and you’ll find quite a solar surprise. Using an ETA 6398 as the base movement, GoS sought the skilled hands of Jochen Benzinger (of Grieb & Benzinger) to produce unique sunray pattern bridges with a gilded finisg. The blued main plate and wheels are adorned with engine-turned guilloché decoration.
While GoS watches are targeted mainly at custom knife collectors, there’s something about Damascus steel that I believe anyone can find appealing. This version in
The GoS Midnight Sun is a limited edition of 5 pieces, of which only 2 remain available to order, with a price tag of $18’500 USD.
